IP Addresses
Many search engine optimizers are very keen on IP addresses. IP addresses are internet addresses that can identify a computer on the internet. IP addresses include a sequence of numbers that can tell a server or individual what country the computer is from and the ISP that it belongs to. IP addresses also can determine what web hosting server a web site is from. While IP addresses aren’t’ usually a cause for concern, if you are a web developer with many sites, you might want to consider how you use IP addresses.
IP addresses can cause a person with lots of site on one server to be penalized. For instance, if you are on a web hosting server with hundreds of other sites and another person has a spam site; your sites can be penalized by the search engines and not rank high.
A common strategy for SEO’s is to place each web site on its own IP address, this way it is unlikely that a search engine will penalize the site due to the IP address. An IP address usually cost about $2 per month from most web hosting companies. If you have hundreds of sites, this can be costly. Most SEO’s decide which sites stay together and which sites get their own IP address.
